Abstract

864,454. Valves. I.V. PRESSURE CONTROLLER Ltd. July 22, 1957 [Aug. 8, 1956], No. 24308/56. Class 135. [Also in Group XXXV] An electromagnetically-actuated fluid-control valve comprises an inlet 1 of brass or other non-magnetic material with a boss 2 fitting in the top of a brass tube 3 into the lower end of which is inserted the boss 7a of a soft iron outlet 6 embodying a flange 7 that supports the solenoid 5 ; between the latter and the tube 3 are three aligned sleeves 21, 22 and 23, sleeve 21 being made of brass whilst the others are of soft iron. The sleeve 21 is positioned to cause a flux concentration around the tip of the polepiece or outlet 24. The tips 2a and 24 of the inlet and outlets, respectively, are joined by a brass tube 26 forming, with the tube 3, an annular space 29 enclosing an armature chamber 25 and incorporating one or more ports 28. Within the chamber 25 is a soft iron armature 32 with longitudinal slots 33 whilst slidable in a cavity 36 in the tip 24 is a main closure 41 having a stepped through-bore 46, the larger bore part being lined with a brass sleeve 43 ; ports 37 through the tip 24 enable fluid in the chamber 25 to enter the cavity 36. Co-operating with the smaller part of the bore 36 is an adjustable pilot-valve 49 connected to the armature 32 ; the valve 49 has flats 52 thereon and closure 41 is made of nylon, P.V.C., synthetic rubber or P.T.F.E. The armature 32 is acted upon in opposite directions by springs 34 and 53, the former being the stronger. With the solenoid de-energized fluid passes directly from the inlet 1 to the outlet 6 via inclined passages 31, space 29 and ports 38 but since the armature 32 is urged by spring 34 into its uppermost position the bore 46 is open so that fluid passing ports 28 acts on top of the closure 41 and the step in bore 26 but such fluid has undergone a pressure-drop and cannot seat the closure 41. Upon energizing the solenoid 5 the armature 32 and pilot valve 49 are drawn downwards towards the tip 24 whereupon the bore 46 is closed and the closure 41 urged on to its seat 40 in the outlet 6, which latter action is aided by fluid pressure building up behind the closure 41 and in the larger part of the bore 46 after passing the flats 52.
