Abstract

877,150. BRITISH TRANSPORT COMMISSION, DELL, R., and HIGGINS, S. L. Dec. 3, 1959 [Feb. 23, 1959], No. 6187/59. Class 135. An electromagnetically-operated valve controlling a compressed-air motor or other device incorporates two non-circular armatures 38, 39, each with a pad 40 of deformable material that co-operates with seats 14, 15 on opposite ends of a plug 13 in a soft iron body 10, the plug leading to a motor connection 19. The armatures are housed in stainless-steel guide sleeves 27, 28, the outer ends of which sleeves are associated with inlet and outlet fittings 24 and 42, respectively, the latter incorporating a filter gauze 43. Soft-iron magnet-yoke straps 21 are clamped to the body 10 by screws 22, and studs 41 of non-magnetic material are provided on the upper faces of each armature. The coils 34, 35 may be connected in series or separately connected to one or more sources of electrical current. Normally the valves are in the position shown with the connection 19 open to exhaust via seat 15 and the space between the armature and guide sleeve; upon energizing the coils 34, 35 the armature 39 moves first to close seat 15 followed by armature 38 which is lifted from the inlet seat 14 against the pressure of the supply fluid which then flows to the connection 19 by the space between the armature 38 and its guide sleeve 27.
