728,534. Electromagnetically-actuated valves. SOC. D'INVENTIONS AERONAUTIQUES ET MECANIQUES S.I.A.M. Jan. 28, 1953 [Feb. 13, 1952], No. 2455/53. Class 135. An electromagnetically-actuated valve controlling the supply of fluid to fluid-operated apparatus, e.g. the operating piston 21, Fig. 2, of a relay valve 20, comprises a body 1 of magnetic material surrounded by the electromagnet winding 10 and enclosing a chamber 5. Pressure fluid is supplied to the chamber from line 3a through a restriction 4 and escapes through an outlet 6 controlled by closure member 7 of magnetic material. Progressive variation of the current in the winding caused, e.g., by operation of a potentiometer, causes progressive movement of member 7 towards or away from the outlet thus providing a progressively increasing or decreasing pressure respectively in chamber 5. The pressure in the chamber is applied through line 13 to the piston 21 which is thus progressively moved against or by the spring 25. In another arrangement, two electromagnetically-actuated valves control the relay valve piston 21, Fig. 3, which has centring springs 25a, 25b, the closure members 7 being interconnected and pivoted at 26. The windings are arranged so that as the current in one is progressively increased the current in the other is progressively decreased. In a modification, the two outlets are opposed and a single closure member is movable therebetween towards one or the other.
