[Also in Group XIII] The heating or cooling of a rubber article is effected by immersing the article in a hot or cold bed of fluidized solid. The rubber articles are exemplified by latex dipped goods such as gloves and boots, by thread formed by extruding latex into a coagulant and by calendered rubber sheet for cutting to threads. A hot bed may be employed for drying such articles and for vulcanizing them. The solid fluidized may be glass spheres of 0À05-0À5 mm. diam., sand, or a shot-blasting material; in order to minimize pick-up by the article of particles of the fluidized solid, 3-4% of french chalk may be incorporated in the bed. An example (Fig. 1) is concerned with drying and vulcanizing wet latex coagula on glove formers 22 in a bed 18 of fluidized 0À5 mm. diam. glass spheres in a vessel 10 having a jacket 20 in which is an electric heater 19, the spheres being fluidized by air driven through a porous tile 14 at the base of the vessel. Another example (Figs. 2 and 3) is concerned with drying and vulcanizing 0À01 in. diam. threads of coagulated extruded latex by passing them over pulleys 36, round pulleys 38 and over pulleys 37 through a heated bed similar to that of Fig. 1.
