Abstract
877,061. Laminates. DURIE & MILLER Ltd. Jan. 6, 1960 [Jan. 13, 1959], No. 1279/59. Class 140. A product comprising a vulcanised layer of foamed and gelled rubber latex having one surface securely attached to a fabric base is made by depositing an unformed mass of foamed rubber latex containing vulcanizing ingredients and a gelling agent on to a conveyer, levelling the foam to a layer of controlled thickness, passing the conveyer and spread layer through a heating device arranged to gel the foam inwards from the surface in contact with the conveyer whilst preventing setting or drying out of the exposed surface, terminating the application of heat whilst the upper surface is still ungelled and undried, contacting this surface with a fabric material under sufficient pressure to adhere it to the surface, and completing the drying and vulcanization of the layer. As shown, a mass 10 of a foamed latex of natural or synthetic rubber is deposited on an upper conveyer 1. It is carried beneath the adjustable doctor blade 5, which levels it off, and over the heater 3, which may comprise infra-red radiant panels. The foam gels progressing upwards, but drying out of the upper surface is prevented by the shield 6. At the end of the conveyer 1, the foam layer falls on to a second conveyer 2, travelling in the opposite direction. This conveyer carries a fabric 12 on to which the foam layer is pressed by its own weight. A second heater 3<SP>1</SP> completes the gelation of the foam. The product is then passed through a drying chamber 9 to complete its drying and vulcanization. The belt of conveyer 1 may be of polished metal, or of a flexible synthetic plastic material to which the rubber latex mixture will not adhere, and may be plane, patterned or embossed to form a complementary pattern on the surface of the foam.
