Abstract

A method of forming sheeting of foamed plastics material comprises applying to at least one surface of a preformed foamed plastics sheet a paste or plastisol of a thermoplastic synthetic resin material, applying heat to the paste or plastisol-coated material so as to avoid thermodecomposition of the foamed plastics material and to set or gel the thermoplastic layer and thereby cause it to adhere as a coating skin or sheet to the surface of the preformed foamed plastics sheet. The foamed plastics sheet may be supported on a resilient surface and may be held under suitable tensioning and straightening devices during the application thereto of a layer of the paste or plastisol by means of doctor blade, spreading or lick coating. The coated sheet may be passed through a heating chamber where the heat is applied from above to the skin or coating of thermoplastic material. After heating the coated foamed plastics sheeting a water cooled roller may be applied under pressure to the skin or coating. The roller may be embossed or otherwise patterned so as to effect the formation of a permanent decorative effect on the coating skin or sheet. The foamed plastics sheet may be of polyurethane or a polyvinyl compound. The coating may be of polyvinyl compound e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetal.
