Abstract

A mat comprises a layer of vulcanized natural or synthetic rubber having a self-adherent layer of a copolymer of a minor proportion of butadiene and a major proportion of a chlorine-free vinyl compound, e.g. methyl methacrylate, styrene or methyl isopropenyl ketone. The rubber layer may have been rendered porous by a blowing agent such as sodium bicarbonate or diazoaminobenzene. The surface layer may contain 6-60 parts of natural rubber or a synthetic rubber such as SBR per 100 parts of the copolymer. An example is concerned with spraying a formulation of a 50%t.s. latex of a copolymer of 31 parts of butadiene with 69 parts of methyl methacrylate, 60%t.s. natural rubber latex, sulphur, mercaptobenzothiazole, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, claret and red dyes, sodium alginate and an ethylene oxide-oleyl alcohol condensation product on one side of a sheet of unvulcanized containing rubber, reclaimed rubber, whiting, HAF carbon black, zinc oxide, mineral oil, paraffin wax, stearic acid, mercaptobenzothiazole and sulphur, drying the coating, vacuum moulding the assembly with the coating in contact with the moulding surface, and then vulcanizing the assembly.
