Abstract

A moulded mat such as a car mat comprises a continuous base layer of vulcanized natural or synthetic rubber composition having adherent thereto a coloured surface layer of thermoset composition containing a vulcanized oil-resistant elastomer and a polymer derived from vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride. The base layer may be cellular or micro-porous, examples of suitable blowing agents being given in the parent Specification. The oilresistant elastomer may be a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile compounded with vulcanizing agents such as sulphur, accelerators of vulcanization and zinc oxide. A vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer may be used in the surface layer with, if desired, plasticizers such as epoxidized oils or polyester plasticizers, e.g. polypropylene adipate. A synthetic rubbery or resinous polymer or copolymer, e.g. butadiene/styrene, may be incorporated into the surface layer to assist processing and modify the hardness of the finishing layer, and also in the production of less flexible abrasion resistant edges for the mat, from a strip of vulcanizable rubber composition harder than the base layer that is applied to the mould surface before applying the continuous base and surface layer. The two layers are joined and the surface layer may be embossed by vulcanization in a vacuum mould.
