Abstract
861,220. Laminates; coated fabrics. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 4, 1959 [Feb. 5, 1958], No. 3741/58. Class 140. Composite sheet materials or articles comprise one or more layers of rubber, or thermoplastic synthetic resin, and one or more layers of a polyurethane composition as claimed in Specification 848,837. The rubber &c. layer may comprise natural rubber, polymers of butadiene, 2-chlorobutadiene or isoprene, or copolymers thereof with styrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, vinyl pyridine, cyanoprene, or isobutene, butyl rubber, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidine chloride, or copolymers such as polyvinyl chloride/acetate. The composite sheets or articles may be formed by laminating separate layers together with pressure and heat, by spread or otherwise coating the molten polyurethane composition on to the other layer or layers, by applying the polyurethane as a lacquer made by dissolving it in solvents such as acetone, methylethyl ketone, chlorinated hydrocarbon such as methylene chloride or ethylene dichloride, or tetrahydrofurane, by dipping rubber &c. articles in the molten polyurethane composition or polyurethane articles in a rubber &c. latex, or by extruding one material over the other. The rubber &c. layer or layers may be cured before or after coating or laminating, may be plied with cotton or other fabric, and may consist of foamed or cellular material. The composite materials may be moulded and may be fabricated into or used for fuel tanks, fuel hose, belting, tyres, shoe soling and printers' blankets. In Examples: (1) a hot melt or re-melt of a polyurethane made from a mixture of ethylene glycol-adipic acid-terephthalic acid polyesters reacted with 1.5 naphthylenediisocyanate, is spread with an electrically-heated doctor blade on cured and uncured tyre tread stocks containing carbon black and natural rubber, chloroprene rubber, or acrylonitrile rubber, and the coated materials subsequently cured; (2) a similar polyurethane in which the diisocyanate used is 3-methyl-4,4<SP>1</SP>-diisoeyanate diphenylmethane is sheeted and cooled, and is then hot-pressed between two sheets of polyvinyl chloride and after-cured in a hot-air oven; (3) the polyurethane of (2) is dissolved in ethylene dichloride and coated on to sheets of umplasticized p.v.c. and plasticized " leather cloth " p.v.c.; (4) a milled sheet of nitrile rubber containing compounding ingredients is subjected to heavy pressure with a polyurethane sheet as in (2) at 110‹ C.; and after-cured for 30 hours at the same temperature; the polyurethane of (2) is extruded through a die at 70-75‹ C., over a butyl rubber coated wire to form a smooth sheath of <SP>1</SP>/ 16 inch thickness. This is dusted with chalk and after standing in a warm atmosphere is cured at 110‹ C. for 30 hours.
