Abstract
In the manufacture of reinforced rubber articles from saturated copolymers of ethene and either propene or butene (1) satisfactory adhesion of the regenerated cellulose fabric used for reinforcement to the copolymers is obtained by a process comprising (1) impregnating the regenerated cellulose fabric with an aqueous dispersion containing (a) a di-or poly-methylol phenol resin obtained from a phenol and formaldehyde and (b) an unsaturated ternary copolymer of ethene, either propene or butene (1) and a non-conjugated diene or triene with 3-22 carbon atoms, which may be completely amorphous and which is copolymerizable with mono-olefins, and which contains 85-29 mol per cent of ethene, 14-5-70.5 mol per cent of propene or butene (1) and 0.5-20 mol per cent of the non-conjugated diene or triene, (2) embedding the impregnated and thereafter dried fabric in a vulcanizable mixture of an unsaturated copolymer of the same kind as specified under (1) (b) with sulphur and a vulcanization accelerator (3) applying a vulcanizable mixture of a saturated copolymer of ethene and either propene or butene (1) and at least one peroxide, e.g. dicumyl peroxide, and sulphur to the composite structure, and (4) vulcanizing the total composite structure while imparting to it a final shape. Acyclic dienes with terminal double bonds or a terminal and a middle double bond, cyclic dienes or trienes or bicyclic dienes may be used to produce the ternary copolymers. Suitable vulcanization accelerators are zinc dimethyl dithiocarbaminate, 2-mercapto benzothiazole, N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazyl-sulphene amide, tetramethyl thiuram mono or disulphide, diphenyl guanidine, morpholine or morpholine disulphide. The di-or poly-methylol phenol resin may be formed in situ. The composition used in step (2) may also contain carbon black, pigments, processing oils and tackifiers.ALSO:In the manufacture of reinforced rubber articles from saturated copolymers of ethene and either propene or butene-(1) satisfactory adhesion of the regenerated cellulose cord threads or fabric used for reinforcement to the copolymers is obtained by a process comprising (1) impregnating the regenerated cellulose cord thread or fabric with an aqueous dispersion containing (a) a di- or polymethylol phenol resin obtained from a phenol and formaldehyde and (b) an unsaturated ternary copolymer of ethene, either propene or butene-(1) and a non-conjugated diene or triene with 3-22 carbon atoms, which may be completely amorphous and which is copolymerizable with mono-olefins, and which contains 85-29 mols per cent of ethene, 14.5-70.5 mol per cent of propene or butene (1) and 0.5-20 mol per cent of the non-conjugated diene or triene, (2) embedding the impregnated and thereafter dried cellulosic material in a vulcanizable mixture of an unsaturated copolymer of the same kind as specified under (1) (b) with sulphur and a vulcanisation accelerator, (3) applying a vulcanizable mixture of a saturated copolymer of ethene and either propene or butene-(1) and at least one peroxide and sulphur to the composite structure, and (4) vulcanizing the total composite structure while importing to it a final shape. A cyclic dienes with terminal double bonds or a terminal and a middle double bond, cyclic dienes or trienes or bicyclic dienes may be used to produce the ternery copolymers. The di- or polymethylol phenol resin may be formed in situ. The composition used in step (2) may also contain carbon black, pigments, processing oils and tackifiers. The peroxide may be dicumyl peroxide.
