Abstract

A sheet of vulcanized butadiene-styrene copolymer rubber composition comprises 125-400% of an extending oil based on the weight of the copolymer. The extending oil may consist of equal parts of naphthenic and paraffinic hydrocarbons. The unvulcanized composition may contain a minor proportion of a liquid phenol-formaldehyde condensate or similar synthetic resin precursor, and may contain a crosslinking agent therefor, e.g. hexamethylene tetramine. Aluminium silicate may be incorporated to facilitate doughing of the unvulcanized composition. The sheet may be made cellular, e.g. a blowing agent such as sodium bicarbonate may be incorporated to inflate the composition before vulcanization is complete. The example is of preparing pasty, inflatable and vulcanizable mixes, for backing hessian web and tufted carpet, of the rubber, a sulphonated-oil plasticizer, stearic acid, zinc oxide, mercaptobenzythiazole, tetramethylthiuram disulphide, thiourea, clay, sodium bicarbonate, aluminium silicate, light process oil, liquid phenolformaldehyde condensate, hexamethylene tetramine, and sulphur, suitable rubbers being a copolymer of about equal parts of butadiene and styrene and already containing 38 parts of extending oil per 100 parts of rubber and a copolymer of 72-78% with 28-23% of styrene.ALSO:A sheet of vulcanized butadiene-styrene copolymer rubber composition comprising 125-400% of an extending oil based on the weight of the copolymer is made cellular. A blowing agent such as sodium bicarbonate may be incorporated in the unvulcanized composition for inflating when vulcanization is effected. The unvulcanized composition may contain liquid phenol-formaldehyde condensate or similar synthetic resin precursor; aluminium silicate may be incorporated to facilitate doughing of the unvulcanized composition. The examples are of spreading a formulation of the rubber, a sulphonated oil plasticizer, stearic acid, zinc oxide, mercaptobenzthiazole, tetramethylthiuram disulphide, thiourea, clay, sodium bicarbonate, aluminium silicate, light process oil, liquid phenol-formaldehyde condensate, hexamethylene tetramine and sulphur on hessian web and on a tufted carpet, and inflating and vulcanizing by heating for 7 min. at 145 DEG C.
