Abstract
Cellular rubber articles are made by frothing an aqueous dispersion of a vulcanizable rubber, gelling the froth in the desired shape, subjecting the wet gelled froth to a high-frequency electrical field to vulcanize the rubber, and thereafter drying the article. In an example, an aqueous dispersion of sulphur and zinc diethyl-dithiocarbamate was added to a concentrated natural latex and then zinc mercaptobenzthiazole added to form a master batch. Part of this master batch was stirred and the following ingredients added in the order named:-piperidinium pentamethylene-dithiocarbamate, potassium salt of castor oil, potassium oleate, zinc oxide, and sodium silicofluoride, after beating, the mix was poured into moulds and vulcanized at approximately 212 DEG F. by high-frequency heating, as described (see Group XI). When neoprene latex is used, the foamed mass is heated to approximately 300 DEG F. Other synthetic rubbers which may be used are copolymers of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile, polybutadiene and butyl rubber.
