Abstract

In a method of making a sponge material comprising frothing natural or synthetic rubber latex, a thermo-setting phenol-aldehyde resin is incorporated in the latex before, during, or after frothing of the latter. In an example, 50 parts natural rubber latex and 50 parts of GR-S synthetic rubber latex are mixed with rosin soap, potassium oleate, alkylated phenol emulsion as antioxidant, sulphur, zinc mercapto-benzothiazyl, and butyl zimate, and frothed. To the froth is then added zinc oxide, 3 or 5 parts of an aqueous solution of a partially condensed resorcinol-formaldehyde resin, and sodium silicofluoride. Alternatively a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin is formed within the foam by adding aqueous solutions of resorcinol and hexamethylene tetramine or paraformaldehyde after the addition of zinc oxide. The water soluble resorcinol-formaldehyde resin may be prepared by dissolving resorcinol in formaldehyde in the presence of water, adding a trace of ferric chloride and then an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide. An inert filler, such as clay, titanium dioxide, or ferric oxide may be incorporated in the mix to be frothed. The frothed mix is gelled by adding sodium silicofluoride and subjecting to the action of high-frequency alternating currents. The frothed latex does not tend to flow and may be shaped, e.g. so as to have a fluted surface, prior to gelation. The vulcanized sponge also has the property that it may easily be provided with a surface design by the application of a heated design forming means.ALSO:In a method of making a sponge material comprising frothing natural or synthetic rubber latex, a thermo-setting phenol-aldehyde resin is incorporated in the latex before, during, or after frothing of the latex.
