Abstract

Cellular and porous rubber is made by mixing latex or a like dispersion with a separately prepared foam, and coagulating the dispersion. The cellular coagulum, unless the dispersion used is prevulcanized, is usually subjected to vulcanization. The dispersion should be sufficiently viscous to ensure that the bubbles of incorporated foam do not levitate to the surface before the mixture sets. In an example, a rubber dispersion mixing comprising 180 gms. of 55 per cent latex preserved with ,5 per cent of ammonia, 5 gms. of mineral oil, 1 gm of zinc oxide, 1 gm. of zinc acetate, ,4 gms. of dimethyldithiocarbamate of zinc and 2 gms. of sulphur having a 50 per cent final concentration in solids is mixed with 120 ccs. of a foam obtained by introducing air into a 5 per cent aqueous solution of glue containing ,5 per cent of an alkali soap, in a whipping machine wherein the stirrers are constituted by oppositely and closely passing coils spaced from one another by approximately 5 mm. The resulting mixture is poured into a mould and heated first for 30 minutes at 60 DEG C. and then for one hour at 100 DEG C. Other examples are given.
