Latex, treating.-Rubber goods are made by spreading, dipping, extruding while still mobile, aqueous dispersions of rubber with which has been admixed a small quantity of phenol &c. with or without a tanning agent and subsequently adding or contacting with a substance capable of reducing the alkalinity of the dispersion but free from local coagulative action to promote gelling. In an example a 60 per cent latex with an alkalinity of 0.4 per cent is compounded as follows in parts by weight. Rubber 100, sulphur 3, accelerator 0.5, zinc oxide 1, phenol 0.65, tannic acid 0.35. Formaldehyde is added to make the mixture neutral when gelling occurs within five minutes. Specifications 219,635 and 290,313 are referred to.
