Abstract
In the production of a material having a cellular structure confining a gas and involving mixing with a concentrated aqueous rubber dispersion a volatile rubber solvent and vulcanizing ingredients, the mixture includes 25 to 200 per cent of a softening oil reckoned on the dry rubber content of the dispersion, with or without a setting agent additional to the volatile solvent. The term "rubber" includes isoprene, butadiene and chloroprene polymers. The softening oil may be paraffin oil of low flash point, in which case it serves also as the volatile solvent, rosin oil, in which case it serves also as the setting agent, or the substance known under the Registered Trade Mark "Vaseline" oil. The volatile solvent, if petrol, serves also as the setting agent. If the softening oil is not very volatile a large proportion of volatile solvent is required, and vice versa. The setting agent may be ammonium carbonate, which may serve as an additional "blowing agent," or ammonium chloride, or a mixture of both. In an example 130 parts of rubber latex of 70 per cent rubber content, 2 parts of sulphur, 2 of zinc oxide, 1 of accelerator, 2 of antioxidizing agent, 150 of paraffin oil and 5 of petrol (all parts by weight) are mixed and stirred to the consistency of cream. Then a quantity of ammonium carbonate in aqueous solution, or rosin oil, is stirred into the mixture to cause it to set to a jelly-i.e. without separation of the serum from the rubber. The material during setting may be rolled in the hands into compact balls, or the mass can be rolled into sheets or otherwise consolidated by mechanical or fluid pressure for instance during the initial stages of vulcanization, which is effected without or within moulds. The material prior to setting may be poured into moulds so as only partially to fill them to permit expansion on formation of the cellular structure. After vulcanization the mass even when cool consists of cellular rubber of approximately the bulk acquired on vulcanization. If an absorbent sponge is required the mass may be mangled to rupture the cells after vulcanization. Specification 381,975 is referred to.
