Abstract

Heat sensitive latex is prepared by adding a water soluble naphthenate and zinc oxide to natureal rubber latex. Suitable naphthenates are those of sodium, potassium, ammonium and water-soluble amines. Preferably the naphthenate is added to the latex which is then allowed to stand for 24 hours, the latex separated into serum and cream and the latter mixed with a zinc oxide dispersion. In Examples (1) and (2), sodium or ammonium naphthenate and zinc oxide dispersed with sulphur, zinc diethyl dithiocarbamate, phenyl naphthylamide and casein dissolved in borax were added to latex and then coconut oil solution, and the mixture frothed and heated to 100 DEG C. for an hour to produce a sponge rubber product, (3) Ammonium naphthenate is added to latex and a similar zinc oxide dispersion, but containing Darvon in place of phenyl naphthylamine and the mixture gelatinized in a mould, (4) Ammonium naphthenate is allowed to stand for two days with latex and, after creaming, zinc oxide dispersion is added to the cream. The resulting rubber is low in protein. Specifications 391,511, 439,364 and 640,258 are referred to.
