Abstract

706,413. Agglutinated fibrous materials. XETAL PRODUCTS, Ltd. Oct. 10, 1951 [Dec. 5, 1950], No. 29697/50. Class 140 A bonded resilient fibrous material suitable for upholstery is made by applying to a loose web of intermingled organic fibres a non- aqueous, liquid, heat-settable adhesive free from volatile solvents, assembling the adhesivecontaining, loose web in a mould, and heating to set the adhesive and bond the fibres together. The adhesive, which may be a polyvinyl compound such as the chloride dispersed in a liquid plasticizer, or a phenol-formaldehyde resin in an incompletely-condensed liquid condition, may be applied by spraying on to thin layers of the fibres, or may be discharged from a row of closely-spaced jets on to a thick web of fibres such as horsehair just before the web passes into the nip between a pair of metal pressure-applying rollers. The web, after a further opening treatment, is assembled in moulds and heated. The shaped article so obtained may be further treated by dipping in rubber solution or latex, allowing surplus to drain off, drying and vulcanising. Instead of polyvinyl chloride, a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride may be used.
