Abstract
863,371. Moulding coverings on electric cables. COMPAGNIE AUXILIAIRE D'ELECTRICITE ET ENTREPRISE. Aug. 1, 1957 [Aug. 27, 1956; Dec. 10, 1956], No. 24442/57. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XI] A mould for vulcanizing the insulating sheaths of electric cables comprises two shells hinged together and having recesses co-operating to form a bore to receive the cable and having electric heating elements of the screened type embedded therein, the shells being sufficiently massive to enable the vulcanization to be effected without overheating the cable when the mould is heated by the electric heating elements or by a burner flame when electricity is not available. In a mould for vulcanizing insulation around a T-shaped cable joint the mould shells 11, 12 each contain a T-shaped recess 15 and are of light metal, e.g. aluminium or aluminium alloy, having embedded therein a screen type tubular electric heating element 51 or 52. Recesses 53, 54 are also provided to receive any overflow of the insulating material during vulcanization. To enable the mould to be used with cables of various pre-selected diameters annular sleeves 62 of various internal diameters may be placed in the ends of the T-shaped mould cavity. The temperature of the mould during vulcanization may be measured by a thermometer 74, the stem of which may be placed in one of two recesses 71, 72. In an alternative embodiment the electric heating elements are energized through a fuse which is adapted to melt when the desired heating period has elapsed.
