Abstract
Apparatus for vulcanising conveyor belts includes a pair of metal plates between which the end lengths of the conveyor belts are to be heated, each metal plate being a cast metal plate having sheathed electrical heating elements cast in it, the metal of which the plate is made being a metal with a lower melting point than the sheathing of the heating elements. The apparatus is safe for use in coal mines.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Vulcanising apparatus
The invention relates to apparatus for vulcanising conveyor belts, that is to say apparatus for joining the ends of adjacent lengths of conveyor belt by the application of heat.
The operation of joining adjacent lengths of conveyor belt is one which is frequently required to be carried out in coal mines. However, because of the fire risk in coal mines, all electrical appliances must be rendered free of the risk of sparking. For this reason, the ends of adjacent lengths of conveyor belt used in coal mines are frequently joined together by mechanical means (which is not very satisfactory since constant flexing very soon causes the joint to fail and the exposed parts of the fixing are a constant danger) or the belts are brought to the surface for joining which is a considerable undertaking when conveyor belt runs are often several hundred yards in length.
The invention has for its object to provide vulcanising apparatus which can be used in coal mines.
According to the invention, there is provided apparatus for vulcanising conveyor belts, the apparatus including a pair of metal plates between which the end lengths of the conveyor belt concerned are to be heated, each metal plate being a cast metal plate having sheathed electrical heating elements cast in it, the metal of which the plate is made being a metal with a lower melting point than the sheathing of the sheathed electrical heating elements.
Each metal plate will preferably have a thermostat extending into it. Each metal plate will preferably also have at least one passage extending through it, the air passage or passages preferably extending in parallel with the electrical heating elements, for the ducting of cooling air or water through the plate.
In order that the invention may be fully understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which :
Figure 1 is a partly cut-away plan view of a metal plate forming part of vulcanising apparatus embody- ing the invention, and
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the line 2-2 in Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings, vulcanising apparatus embodying the invention incorporates a pair of metal plates, such as the metal plate generally indicated 10 in the drawings, and between which the end lengths of a pair of conveyor belts which are to be joined together are to be heated.
The metal plate 10 which is illustrated in the drawings is a cast metal plate having sheathed electrical heating elements 12 cast in it within its thickness. The metal of which the plate is made is a metal of lower melting point than the sheathing of the sheathed electrical heating elements. (It will be seen in Figure 1 that the plate there illustrated by way of example only has two separate heating elements 12 of sinuous form cast in it but it will be understood that it could have only one or more than two). A thermostat 14 extends into the metal plate and is arranged to switch off the electrical supply to the heating elements when the plate has been raised to the required working temperature.
As shown in Figure 1, the electrical connections to the heating elements 12 are made in a cavity 16 at one end of the cast metal plate, the cavity being enclosed by a metal cover plate 18. An indicator light 20 is set into the metal plate to show when the electrical heating elements are in operation. The electricity supply to the heating elements is by a system of plugs and sockets and armoured cable all to N.C.B. specifications.
It will be understood that since the electrical heating elements are cast within the metal plates of the apparatus the risk of sparking has been virtually eliminated. Consequently, it is thought that the apparatus will be considered suitable for use in coal mines.
Various modifications can be made. For example, it will be understood that the cast plates may be of various sizes and shapes. Furthermore, it would be advantageous for each metal plate to have at least one air or water passage extending through it, the air/water passage or passages preferably extending in parallel with the electric heating elements for the ducting of cooling air or water through the plate.
Claims (4)
1. Apparatus for vulcanising conveyor belts, the apparatus including a pair of metal plates between which the end lengths of the conveyor belt concerned are to be heated, each metal plate being a cast metal plate having sheathed electrical heating elements cast in it, the metal of which the plate is made being a metal with a lower melting point than the sheathing of the sheathed electrical heating elements.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1, in which each metal plate has a thermostat extending into it.
3. Apparatus according to claim 2, in which each metal plate also has at least one air or water passage extending through it, the passage or passages extending in parallel with the electrical heating elements, for the ducting of cooling air or water through the plate.
4. Apparatus for vu Icanising conveyor belts arranged and adapted to operate substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
