<PICT:0869172/IV (a)/1> In a portable vulcanizing press, particularly for repairing conveyer belts of various widths, a pair of connected beams, adjustable towards one another, and extending across the belt 10 that is placed between them, are each provided with a heating platen 12 or 13 which can slide along its associated beam, one of the platens being provided with means for urging it towards the other. As shown, Fig. 2, the platen 12 is guided for longitudinal sliding movement by means of a flanged bush 26 which engages a slideway 18 formed between two members comprising the beam 14, and can be urged toward the platen 13 by means of a bolt 27 which, engaging in a thread in a bush 26, urges the stem 24 of the platen downwardly. To prevent the edge of the belt from deforming during the heating, a bar 41 is pressed against the edge by bolts 42 engaging in the threaded holes of pins 39 which in turn are located in holes in the platens. The latter may be cooled by air passing through an enclosed tube or heated by an electrical element. In a modification, the downward pressure is applied to the platen 12 by a rotatably-connected screw which engages a threaded hole in a block slidably mounted in the first beam.
