Abstract

<PICT:0934048/IV(a)/1> Apparatus for simultaneously stretching heated plastic foil both longitudinally and transversely comprises longitudinal stretching means and a plurality of individual, unconnected clamping members all of which are movable independently of adjacent clamping members which provide the transverse stretching, the construction being such that the transverse stretching can be varied according to the longitudinal stretch to be applied to the foil. As shown, clamping members 8 are adapted to engage with and grip each longitudinal edge of the foil, the clamping members on each edge being engageable with and movable along guide rails 7 disposed on each side of the foil, by means of freely rotatable rollers 9, the engagement of the clamping members with the guide rail being arranged to apply the transverse stretching, the guide rails being mounted so that their position relative to the foil can be varied according to the longitudinal stretching to be applied to the foil. As shown, each guide rail may comprise two or more sections pivotally connected together so as to be displaceable toward and away from the foil relative to the other section or sections, and the guide rails may be carried by shoes 3 mounted on guides 2 adjustable transversely to the foil by lead screws 4.
