Abstract

863,289. Transformers and inductors. ENGEL & GIBBS Ltd. Oct. 27, 1959 [Dec. 16, 1958], No. 40582/58. Class 38 (2). An inductor or transformer which may be used to sense the tilt of a gyroscope comprises one or more windings 29 on a straight or curved glass tube 22 in which a magnetic ferrite core 24, which may be a solid or hollow sphere or cylindrical or barrel-shaped, rolls to vary the self or mutual inductance of the coils with change in their tilt. Tube 22 contains a damping liquid, e.g. a silicone oil, and has low-pressure or evacuated expansion chambers, 27, 28. Winding 29 may vary in pitch to show the sense of the core displacement (Fig. 6, not shown) or it may be concentrated so that a small displacement gives a large signal (Fig. 7, not shown). The weakness of the coils' magnetic flux ensures that it does not displace the core.
