Abstract

862,864. Hand tool handles. WILKINSON SWORD Ltd., and RANDOLPH, H. B. Dec. 24, 1959 [Dec. 30, 1958], No. 41980/58. Class 61. The elongated tang 12 of a tool extends into and is secured in an elongated hole 11a in a wooden handle 11, a ferrule 13 fitted into an annular slot 11b surrounds the elongated hole 11a. As shown the ferrule 13 is cup shaped, the diameter of the annular slot being such that the ferrule must be inserted therein under pressure. The tang 12 is of rectangular cross-section and fits within a matching slot 13b in the base of the ferrule. Prior to insertion of the tang, the rectangular hole 11a in the handle is coated with adhesive. With the tang heated the handle is driven home on to the tang until a shoulder 12b on the tang enters the slot in the ferrule and abuts against the mouth of the hole in the handle and the rim of the ferrule at each end of the slot. In a modification the ferrule is formed by two separable parts namely an open ended cylindrical part and a slotted cover.
