Abstract

628,911. Hand-tool handles. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., SEDDON, R. M., and GOULDING, G. H. June 24,1947, No. 16606. [Class 61(i)] A handle for a tool having a tang comprises a body of rubber or other resilient material having a socket and a metal insert bonded therein having a hole adapted to engage the tang. In one embodiment, a sheet-metal stamping has four arms disposed at right angles to each other and bent to form the insert 2, Fig. 1, of square and tapering cross section, around which the rubber handle 1 is moulded. The insert is distensible, the tool being retained by inwardly directed pressure' due to the resilience of the material. The insert may be bent from two stampings having arms disposed at 180‹ to each other or may be shorter in length and provided with outwardly directed flanges, Fig. 3, not shown. A distensible tapered insert may also be formed by a helical spring, Fig. 4, not shown. In the embodiment of Fig. 5, the insert comprises a washer 8, the tang being gripped by the walls of the socket 2, whilst the washer prevents the tang from contacting the closed end of the socket. The material of the handle may be oil resistant.
