Abstract
In the process of Specifications 747,190 and the parent Specification for producing hydrogen peroxide involving successive reduction and oxidation of a solution of an alkylated anthraquinone in a mixture of an aliphatic ester of cyclohexanol or of an alkylcyclohexanol. e.g. methyl cyclohexanol acetate, and one or more alkyl-substituted benzenes containing one or more alkyl e.g. methyl or ethyl, groups, the alkyl benzene is purified by treatment with an aliphatic peracid in liquid phase before incorporation into the mixture. The alkyl benzenes may be petroleum fractions containing a mixture of xylene isomers, or containing 50% mesitylene (1 : 3 : 5) and 1 : 3 : 4 trimethyl benzene. The peracid should contain not more than 4C atoms, and is preferably generated in situ, and the reaction products should be separated before addition to the solvent mixture. H.COCH is added to the alkyl benzene and then H2O2 and the reaction with the resulting performic acid may be 3-6 hours with constant stirring at, say, 30-50 DEG C.
