Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formulae <FORM:0890475/IV (b)/1> wherein Ac is the acyl radical of a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid, and R1 represents hydrogen or the acyl radical of a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid containing from 1-12 carbon atoms inclusive, and processes for the preparation thereof by esterifying 16-methylpregnenolone to obtain 3b ,20-dihydroxy-16-methyl-5,17(20)-pregnadien-3,20-diacetate, treating this compound with a peracid to obtain 3b ,20-dihydroxy-5a , 6a , 17a , 20- diepoxy - 16- methyl - pregnadiene - 3, 20 - diacetate, hydrolysing to obtain 3b , 17a - dihydroxy - 5a , 6a - epoxy - 16 - methylpregnan-20-one, esterifying to form the 3-acylate thereof, removing any 5b ,6b -epoxy compound by chromatography or by fractional crystallisation, and treating 3b ,17a -dihydroxy-5a , 6a - epoxy - 16 - methyl - pregnan - 20 - one or a 3-acylate thereof with HF to obtain 3b ,5a ,17a -trihydroxy - 6b - fluoro - 16 - methyl - pregnan - 20-one and the 3-acylate thereof. Examples describe the preparation of 3b ,17a -dihydroxy-5a , 6a - epoxy - 16a - methylpregnan - 20 - one - 3 - acetate, 3b , 5a , 17a - trihydroxy - 6b - fluoro - 16a - methyl - pregnan - 20 - one 3 - acetate and 3b ,5a ,17a -trihydroxy - 6b - fluoro - 16a - methyl - pregnan-20-one.
