Abstract
Vulcanized rubber is detackified and its surface lustre is improved by immersing the surface in a 1 to 4% aqueous solution of per acetic acid of pH less than 7 and at a temperature of 130-155 DEG F., for a period of 4 to 10 minutes. A stabilizer for the per acetic acid, such as a polyphosphate, and a nonionic or anionic detergent may be included in the solution. The term rubber includes natural rubber and conjugated diene polymers or copolymers wherein the conjugated diene has 4 to 6 carbon atoms such as polybutadiene, polyisoprene, polybutadiene styrene, polychloroprene, and polybutadiene acrylonitrile rubbers. According to an example (Example 6), a strip of cured natural rubber was immersed for 5 minutes in a 2.4% per acetic acid solution, containing 0.03% of an alkyl aryl polyether detergent and 0.15% of sodium hexametaphosphate having a pH of 2.2 and p temperature of 150 DEG F.; the rubber strip was then washed free of solution with cold water. The treated rubber strip had a lustrous and smooth surface. Example 8 is directed to the treatment of a butadiene-styrene rubber in a 2.4% per acetic solution containing 0.15% of sodium hexametaphosphate.
