Strip units 53 for making wood panels are formed by cutting scrap timber across faces 12, 14 between two saws, planing the block on two faces 20, 22, providing grooves 24 or holes by mortising, moulding or boring, and dividing the block along the grain by ganged rip-saws. The units are then joined edge-toedge by adhesive to form sections 54 which are fitted within a framework 56, the grooves being arranged to match in adjacent strip units so that the panel, when assembled, is apertured. A sound absorbent or thermal insulating backing may be provided.
