Class 145 Chair backs, cabinet doors or other curved open-work furniture components are made by locating a solid wooden panel 6 upon a jig 1 having a templet on its under side, 'executing the desired relief work 7 on the upper face of the panel with the aid of the templet and a profiled cutter fitted in a routing machine, removing the panel from the jig and, in a press, cementing to the rear side a number of veneer or ply sheets to form a laminated . structure whilst at the same time bending and setting the structure to the required curvature and then re-positioning the structure on the jig, and using the original or a similar templet, removing all the wood not required in the finished design. The upper side of the templet is provided with locating bolts 3 and gaps 5 are provided in protective strips 4 on the under side to permit entry of the tracer element of the routing machine. The profile cutter employed for the relief work may be formed to produce a cut or groove having bevelled or rounded edges and at this stage the frame of the chair back to be produced may be outlined as indicated at 8 so that in the finished component the frame structure has a corresponding bevelled or rounded edge. When cutting away the wood not required in the finished design, indicated by shading in Fig. 6, the cutting is preferably done by a straight-edged tungsten-tipped rotary cutter to produce a straight clean edge. If the curvature of the glued assembly does not permit it to rest firmly on the jig, a supporting plate which is flat on its underside and has the appropriate curvature on its upper side may be interposed between the jig and the assembly.
