Veneers are produced by pressing a stack of glued laminations 11 covered on at least the top and bottom faces with relatively thick sections of timber 12, 13 and slicing or rotarypeeling the veneers from the block so produced. The timber sections consolidate the block during handling and cutting and provide a protective edge on the cut veneers but may also be used as part of the veneers if they are of good-quality timber. Where the laminations are of undular form, as shown, the timber sections may be made by cutting along a wavy line through a block of wood and the parallel edges of the block are then more easily accommodated between the flat platens 14 of a press. Where wood wedges are inserted in the block to produce waviness, the timber sections can be cut at the appropriate angle to give parallel edges. The blocks may be held together by steel bands or cramps while the glue is setting and these may be left in place while the block is steamed, or immersed in water prior to steaming, before cutting takes place. Covering sections may be glued on additional faces of the laminations to give further protection and to allow the clamped blocks to be sliced practically from end to end.
