Wood veneer is produced by cutting transversely a laminated stack of veneer sheets glued together under pressure, the glue used being a heat-setting glue with a content of free water which is taken up by the sheets in order to cause softening thereof during hardening of the glue and ensure that the moisture content of the laminated block is high enough to permit the transfer completely through the block of externally-applied heat for setting the glue and low enough to allow the glue securely to bond the laminations together. The amount of water is found by weighing the veneer sheets, subtracting the oven dry weight of an equal volume of veneer of the same species to give the actual water of the sheets, which should preferably be about 4 to 8% by weight, and calculating the amount necessary to raise the final water content of the sheets to between 10 and 25%, preferably about 17¢%. The stack is compacted under a pressure of 100- 150 lb. per sq. inch and is heated to a temperature of from 165‹ to 195‹ F. either by saturated steam or hot water or by highfrequency heating with a power loading between 0.0340 and 0.0420 kilowatts per minute per cubic foot. A table of weights of various woods at moisture contents of 10%, 17¢% and 25% and in oven-dry condition is given and also a formula for the glue. Specification 835,075 is referred to.
