Abstract

A bonding material is made by mixing a liquid non-resinous reaction product of urea (U) and formaldehyde (F) in a mol ratio of F/U between 4:1 and 7.3:1 which has a pH of at least 7.0 and a total solids content of 60 to 90% by weight, with sufficient U to adjust the total mol ratio of F/U to between 1.25:1 and 2:1 at a temperature below 38 DEG C. The liquid nonresinous reaction products used are described in U.S.A. Specification 2,652,377. Extenders, e.g. wheat, shell or wood flour or a -cellulose, water and a hardening catalyst, may be added. The final mixtures are spread on the materials to be bonded and cured in situ, preferably with the aid of heat and/or pressure. In Example 4, pine chips were first sprayed with a solution obtained by adding ammonium chloride to a glue solution made in the above manner, and then with an aqueous paraffin wax emulsion, and the treated chips were piled into a mat and press-cured at 149 DEG C. to yield chipboard. In other examples the glue is used for making laminates (see Division B5) and foundry sand cores. U.S.A.
