Abstract

861,502. Crimping fibres and yarns. CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 16, 1959 [Oct. 18, 1958], No. 35081/59. Class 120(3) Fibrous material, i.e. filaments, yarns, tow or staple, is crimped by apparatus comprising two pairs of rolls respectively feeding the material into, and controlling its release from, a stuffing box of uniform cross-section e.g. a tube of rectangular or circular cross-section or as may be formed by two parallel blades bounded on opposite sides by resiliently mounted plates. Feed and/or control rolls may be resiliently mounted and their surfaces roughened or toothed. In a multiple assembly for crimping a number of yarns, the stuffing boxes are combined in a single block. The apparatus shown comprises feed rolls 1, 2, doctor blades 3, 4, and control rolls 5, 6 (rotating at lower, adjustable speed than rollers 1, 2) mounted in rigid connecting links 13 and 14 the distance between which is variable: side plates, as at 12, may be faced with a low friction coating such as polytetrafluoroethylene. Pressure is applied between the respective pairs of rolls by a rubber compression spring (not shown) and to side plates by a pneumatic cylinder (not shown) acting on loading arms Fig. 2 (not shown). Adjustment of the gap between blade edge and the rolls is made by rotation of housings 31, 34, 35, 38, which eccentrically mount rollers 15, 18, 19, 22, on needle bearings 23, 26, 27, 30: rollers 16, 17, 20, 21, are concentrically mounted in their housings. It is stated that, if the distance between the blades is sufficiently small, then the material product possesses a small "primary" crimp only, i.e. crimp formed in the nip of the feed rollers against the pressure exerted by the material in the box.
