Abstract

694,789. Preparation of fibres for spinning. BRITISH RAYON RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Aug. 2, 1951 [June 17, 1950], No. 15211/50. Classes 120(i), 120(ii) and 120 (iii) Prior to stapling, a tow of filaments is spread into a :sheet by feeding the filaments, while under tension, between rollers which rotate at an angle oblique to the direction of travel of the filaments and are thereto subjected to frictional forces having a lateral component arranged to increase progressively with the amplitude of lateral displacement. In the apparatus shown, tow a is fed through feed rollers, comprising a fluted roller b and a leather apron c, to a pair of conical friction rollers d and e having axes inclined relative to the axes of the feed rollers, the respective nips being parallel. Rollers d, e are driven by articulated shafts d', e<SP>1</SP> and the upper roller may be mounted in vertically floating bearings with adjustable springs (not shown) at each end to provide means for varying the nip pressure. The sheet a<SP>1</SP> passes to delivery rolls, comprising a fluted roller f and an apron g, the nip of which is inclined at at an angle not exceeding 40 degrees to that of the feed rollers. An alternative angular position of the feed roller is illustrated in dotted lines in Fig 2. Specification 693,362 is referred to.
