Abstract

1,257,411. Corrugating webs. CARL MUNTERS A.B. 26 Feb., 1970 [11 March, 1969], No. 9373/70. Heading D1S. Apparatus for corrugating a fibrous web 50, e.g. a paper, asbestos or cellulosic fibre web, impregnated with a liquid comprises a mould 12 movable along a straight path and having grooves 16 extending diagonally relative to its direction of movement and a corrugating head 10 of circular section cooperating with the mould 12, rotatable about an axis parallel to the diagonal grooves and having uniformlyspaced vanes 24 projecting into the troughs of the grooves 16, the vanes 24 being spaced about the head 10 to rotate therewith and being movable transversely to the plane of the mould 12 in such manner that always at least one vane 24 retains a corrugation formed by the vane pressed against the mould 12. As shown in Fig. 2, the web 50 is fed from a roll 44 into an impregnating bath 54 containing, for example, an aqueous solution of melamine and a minor amount of alcohol and a catalyst. Excess solution is squeezed out by rollers 56 and the web 50 is fed at a predetermined angle between the head 10 and the mould 12. The mould 12 comprises a series of metal plates 14 connected to form an endless belt and the head 10 comprising a circular-section cylinder 22 having uniformlyspaced vanes 24, preferably of polytetrafluoroethylene, radially projecting therefrom. The ends of the head 10 are each supported by a journal 28 mounted in a link 30 connected to a bracket 34 fixed to the apparatus frame 18 so that the vanes 24 can be swung along a short path which is approximately perpendicular to the plane of the mould 12. A spring 36 provided on one or each side of the head 10 urges the head towards the mould 12. The downward movement of the head 10 is limited by adjustable set screws 38. The corrugations are retained in the grooves 16 by applying suction, through a conduit 60, to a hood 50, the plates 14 being perforated for this purpose. The web is dried by radiant heat from a source 62.
