Abstract
Apparatus for treating textiles-for example the spreading of a multifilament tow into a flat band prior or subsequent to a tow opening operation in the production of cigarette filters or non-woven textiles, or prior to the application of plasticisers or lubricants,-or for feeding webs of little dimensional stability has a passageway of rectangular cross-section shallow in relation to its width with the passageway open at opposite ends and curving from end to end, and means for supplying fluid under pressure into the passageway through apertures in at least one curved wall thereof. As described the passageway is formed between a drum and an arcuate plate with the apertures either slots or holes being formed in one of them. The tow or web may be accelerated or retarded through the passageway by having the apertures at one end rather than the other, by having the thickness of the passageway decreasing towards one end or by having the slots or holes inclined towards one end. The slots may be parallel to the axis of the drum or inclined thereto or be in a herring bone pattern. The apertured curved wall is of metal or other wear resisting material but the other wall may be of the same material or a transparent plastic material.
