Abstract
1312431 Treating textile fibres and fabrics. COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANISATION 4 Jan 1971 308/71 Headings D1F and D1S [Also in Divisin C3] Cotton, rayon or other cellulosic or cellulose derived fibres having a critical surface tension of 72 dynes/cm or more are produced by subjecting the untreated fibres to the action of an electric discharge until the fibres have a critical surface tension of not less than 72 dyne/cm, with the proviso that, when operating with a sparkless corona discharge, electrical break down between electrodes due to the application of a voltage in the frequency range of from 50 to 1,000,000 H 2 must be restricted by the introduction between the electrodes of a low loss dielectric material. This discharge may be a sparkless corone discharge produced in a gaseous medium, e.g. air at atmospheric pressure or the discharge may be produced by an A.C. electric supply having a frequency of from 50, to 1,000,000 H 2 . For continuous operation of the process it has been found preferable to pass the material in web form between one or more pairs of rotating rollers or between several smaller rollers and one larger one.
