Abstract

1,086,686. Treating synthetic fibres electrically. H. EICKEN. Sept. 18, 1964 [Sept. 20, 1963; Jan. 27, 1964], No. 38289/64. Heading B5B. Synthetic textile fibres of spoolable length are treated by passing them through a zone at atmospheric pressure between at least one pair of electrodes to which is applied an alternating voltage of adjustable intensity and frequency to cause an electrical discharge to pass through the fibres therein to form a number of minute passages in the fibres and roughen their surfaces. The fibres may be treated before or after being stretched. The alternating voltage is preferably sinusoidal. As disclosed one of the electrodes of the or each pair is a rotatable roller over and in contact with which the fibres are caused to travel, while the other electrode is a fixed curved metallic plate which is spaced from and partially surrounds the roller. The fibres may be passed through a heating zone before passing through the electrical treatment zone. Means may be provided for adjusting the distance between the electrodes of the or each pair.
