Abstract

1,215,139. Carbon fibres. COTTON SILK & MAN-MADE FIBRES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 7 June, 1968 [11 March, 1967], No. 11498/67. Heading ClA. A carbon or graphite material of high strength and modulus of elasticity in one direction is prepared by stretching a film of carbonisable material to cause fabrillation or incipient fabrillation in the film in a particular direction, physically manipulating the oriented film if desired to cause the film to fibrillate, and carbonising the material or partially or wholly graphitising it. The stretching process may be completed before subjecting the film to the remaining steps. The physical manipulation such as kneading, brushing or teasing in the stretch direction or rubbing the sheet transversely between moving plates may be carried out as a second step or during the carbonising stage. The film may be oxidized at the start of the carbonising stage. At any stage the film may be slit into narrow strips to give a parallel assembly of tapes. In the examples a film containing at least 85% polyacrylonitrile and a cellulosic film are used. The product of the invention may be used to reinforce plastics, resins or metal materials.
