Abstract

861,355. Vacuum-moulding thermoplastic sheet materials. DU FONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. June 25, 1958 [June 25, 1957], No. 20284/58. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups XVII and XXIII] A sheet 32 of thermoplastic resin is clamped to a frame 34 by bars 30, the sheet heated until it is soft, and the softened sheet positioned over a heated die 17. A heated plug 18 is then pushed down, until it reaches the position shown in Fig. 3, compressing the air between the sheet and the surface of the die 17, forcing the sheet up into the cavity 35 in the bottom of the plug 18, the bottom of the plug being open to atmosphere or suction through a passage 27. Vacuum is then applied at 19, and air withdrawn through ports 20. 23 and the sheet drawn into contact with the die 17. It is stated that by the use of such a die, the bottom of the sheet is drawn to the same extent as that of the outer wall. The die and plug may be made of aluminium, and the plug may have a thin coating of polytetrafiuoroethylene to prevent the sheet from sticking. The forming die may have a satin finish. The thermoplastic resin sheet may be polyethylene, polymethylmethacrylate, nylon, polyvinyl chloride, cellulose acetate or butyrate or polyoxymethylene resins. The Specification includes numerical details of the plug and die temperatures, and the relative sizes and tapers of the die and plug. In a modification, Fig. 5, the bottom of the sheet may be predrawn, by blowing it out instead of sucking it in, by applying compressed air through a passage 48 in the plug 45.
