Abstract

866,378. Blow-moulding hollow articles. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. Feb. 3, 1960 [May 6, 1959], No. 15607/59. Class 87(2). A method of blow-moulding hollow articles of plastic material, e.g. cellulose esters, polyethylene, p.v.c. or polystyrene, comprises clamping a length of extruded tube between the opposite ends of a mould 1, 2 so that the leading end of the tube embraces a hollow mandrel 5 and expanding the tube by admitting fluid under pressure to the tube laterally and downwardly from the interior of the mandrel 5. The fluid may be admitted to the tube through holes 13 inclined to the base of the mould at an angle of less than 90 degrees and preferably 60 degrees to the mandrel axis or as shown in Fig. 8, the mandrel 5 may have an adjustably attached end piece 16 forming an annular gap 18. The extruded tube may be severed by the top of the mould or by a knife 15 and the moulded article may be ejected from the mandrel 5 by compressed fluid or by the actuation of a reciprocating plate 8.
