Abstract

996,186. Blow moulding hollow articles. A DI SETTEMBRINI. Feb. 7, 1962 [March 27, 1961], No. 4673/62. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B8] Hollow plastics articles, e.g. bottles, are blow moulded from a tubular heated blank, by rupturing part of the blank wall by means of a solid punching tool and injecting fluid into the blank through the annular gap formed around the punching tool. A tubular blank 13 is clamped between mould halves 1 and 2 and ruptured by a pneumatically driven punching tool 4, which slides loosely in a passage 3 in mould half 1. The piston 7 is driven forward by compressed air from pipe 9 and at a predetermined position, after the tool has pierced the blank air is admitted from space 6a, through pipe 11, through orifice 12a, in mould half 1, and through the annular gap around the punching tool (see Fig. 8) into the blank. As the tool fits loosely in passage 3 the air bleeds off into the atmosphere, thus providing a continuous cooling stream of pressurized air. After the moulding the punching tool is retracted and the removal of any residual air or volatile material facilitated by a discharge duct 12b connected via a valve 15 to a vacuum pump 14. The moulded article may be filled by means of reciprocable fluid injection tube 16. Two articles may be produced at once as illustrated in Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown).
