Abstract
1318384 Blow-moulding partitioned containers ELBATAINER KUNSTSTOFF-UND VERPACKUNGS-GmbH & CO 10 Sept 1970 [16 Sept 1969] 43338/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division B8] A blow-moulded, thermoplastics container includes internal partitions or anti-surge panels therein. It is formed e.g. using the apparatus of Fig. 6 from a tube 39 extruded from head 35 of extruder 33 by blow-moulding in mould 36. A core 37 is movable through head 35 and comprising an inner mandrel 38a movable telescopically within an outer mandrel 37a, each mandrel carrying one of two internal walls 25. As tube 39 is extruded, its lower end passes photo-cell 53 actuating downward movement of mandrel 38a with lower of walls 25. When the desired spacing between walls 25 is reached, setting ring 55 engages mandrel 37a, pushing it downwardly with the upper of walls 25. When walls 25 are in their correct position, member 47 engages switch 45 actuating first-stage mould closure. Carrier end pieces 40 are then urged forwardly by electromagnets to engage the tube 39 and walls 25 which are then welded together. Mandrels 37a, 38a are then withdrawn, member 47 engaging switch 46 to actuate complete mould closure. Blowing air is supplied by needle 56 at the side of the mould. To switch off the machine if end pieces 40 do not satisfactorily engage the walls 25, each end piece 40 may be driven hydraulically uncovering an exhaust port (61, Fig. 8, not shown) if they move too far without engagement, or alternatively, each end piece may close a switch mechanism (63-65, Fig. 9, not shown) arranged in series so that any one incorrect location of end piece 40 opens the electrical circuit. The walls (27, Fig. 10, not shown) may be inserted from below by mandrel (66) using vacuum heads (67) to keep the lower end of tube 39 open. End pieces 40 may be replaced by internal ridges to engage the walls. Walls (30, Fig. 11, not shown) may be introduced by a mandrel (37-38) from above as in Fig. 6 but which also supplies blowing air through holes (73) and may have a screw-threaded neck portion (71). The profiles (68a) engaging walls (30) may be vacuum-formed. The mandrel inserting the walls may be retained to serve as a strut in the container, being welded to the container walls.
