Abstract

<PICT:0793445/III/1> <PICT:0793445/III/2> A tube 13, Fig. 1, of plastic material is extruded from a nozzle 6 when the nozzle is within a mould 1 as indicated by broken lines, and the lower end 15 of the tube is clamped in an opening in a plate 16 by a conical or other plug 17. The nozzle is then raised out of the mould whilst air is blown into the tube through a pipe 5. When the nozzle has been raised out of the mould the base of the blown article is closed by bringing two knives 18, 181 together, and blowing may be continued thereafter until the tube has been wholly applied to the mould. Fig. 2 shows a modified arrangement in which the knives 18, 181 are initially above the end of the mould but descend to force the projecting material 13 into the mould and form a strong junction between the base and the side wall of the article. In this modification the blowing pipe 5 is carried by a hinged plate 20 which can be swung away to allow the extruded tube to issue at the beginning of the operation. The mould 1 may be a tube or receptacle, and the hollow body 13 a lining for it.
