Abstract

697,326. Blowing glass-ware. WALKER, J. S., and FRASER & GLASS, Ltd. July 26, 1951 [July 27, 1950], No. 18805/50. Class 56. [Also in Group V] A tube of thermoplastic material, e.g. glass, is extruded over the open end of a nozzle 22 which is connected to a compressed air line 23, the nozzle being in line with the extruder (not shown) but separate therefrom and pointing towards it, and the two mould halves 8, 9 are closed around the extruded tube (to the position shown). The mould halves compress the lower or free end of the tube around the nozzle and at the same time compress and seal the upper end of the tube and cut it off from the parent body. Air is then blown through the nozzle to expand the tube into contact with the inside of the mould. The hollow article thus produced is allowed to cool, the mould halves are separated and the article is removed. The article may be a container, bottle or toy. The mould halves have threaded portions 30, 31 which form a screwthreaded neck on the hollow article. The nozzle 22 may be formed with threads or projections the shape of which is imparted to the interior of the container. The mould halves are mounted on members 2, 3 which slide on rails. The nozzle is carried by a slide 4 which is moved by means of a handle 7. The mould halves are urged together by compressed air acting on pistons 13 and are urged apart by springs 20; alternatively, the mould may be closed by hydraulically- or mechanically-operated cams or toggles. Material adhering to the extruder orifice may be removed by a knife or scraper attached to the mould and passing over the face of the orifice when the mould is closed. After the mould is opened the article may be blown off the nozzle by air blast from the latter. Both the mould and the nozzle may be water-cooled. A series of moulds with air nozzles may be mounted on an intermittently - rotated disc which brings the moulds in turn under the extruder.
