In an electric battery lamp in which the casing is fitted with a carrying handle and accommodates a supply battery composed of eight standard cells arranged in two columns of four cells in two rows, the cells of each column being connected in series by contact strips at one end of the casing and the positive and negative terminals of each series connected column of cells making contact with a pair of contact strips at the other end of the casing. one of the latter contact strips is provided with a contact surface for use with the centre pole of a unitary battery which can be located in the battery casing-in place of the columns of cells and is located by a projection bearing against the opposite end of it. Fig. 3 shows the front end of the casing on which are mounted two contact strips 26, 27 which engage the end terminals of the series connected columns of cells, the strip 26 having a depending contact 66 for use with the central terminal of a unitary battery. The connecting strips 68, 69, Fig. 4 at the opposite end of the casing have their ends bent into substantially triangular shapes to bear on the terminals of the batteries. A rib 74 is provided between the strips 68, 69 to allow the use of a unitary battery shorter than the combined length of the standard cells. The strips 26, 27 are connected by flexible leads 28, 78 respectively, to the centre contact of the lamp bulb and to a switch mounted in the carrying handle. The switch has two " on " positions in one of which the circuit is closed only by depression of a push button as in Specification 854,077. A second lamp bulb may be carried e.g. on a frame pivotally mounted on the battery casing as described in Specification 827,693.
