Abstract
860,664. Trueing grinding wheels; diamond tools. SUPER-CUT Inc. June 10, 1958 [June 10, 1957], No. 18529/58. Classes 60 and 124. A method of trueing a grinding wheel '52 comprises presenting a selected point or edge 60 of the surface of a diamond dressing stone 14 to the wheel with its (110) crystal direction parallel to the direction of abrasion (i.e. with its direction of high resistance to abrasion perpendicular to the surface of the wheel), and effecting traversing movements between the stone and wheel. A flat a is thereby generated on the stone, and then first one edge of the flat is applied to the stone with the (110) crystal direction parallel to the direction of abrasion until a second flat b is generated which forms an edge with the first flat a, and then the second edge of the first flat is applied to the wheel again with the (110) crystal direction parallel to the direction of abrasion to generate a third flat c which also forms an edge with the first flat, the two edges thus forming a ridge in the plane of the first flat in the same positional relation to the diamond as the initial point. The stone 14 is mounted in a shank 12 which is pivotally adjustable about a bolt 32 to one of three positions determined by a bolt 46 in one of three holes 38, 40, 42 on a holder 22 mounted on a slide for traversing movements across the grinding wheel ; in the central position, the axis of the shank passes centrally through the stone and intersects the axis of the wheel. The stone may be an octahedron, tetrahexahedron, slab or other shaped diamond and is mounted so that the direction of the (110) dodecahedron plane is parallel to the direction of abrasion. After the initial point has worn to form the first flat a, the tool can be angularly adjusted by repositioning the bolt 46 to pivot the axis of the shank through between 6 to 30 degrees first on one side and then the other, the consecutive movements of the shank producing flats a to m on the stone. Angular movements of the axis of the shank may be effected by inserting the shank, the bolt 46 being used in the same hole. Satisfactory trueing may be attained providing the (110) direction of the diamond does not deviate more than 5 degrees from true parallelity with the direction of abrasion.
