A machine for forming a surface, such as a spheroidal or toroidal surface, on a workpiece P, Fig. 2, comprises a mount B for the workpiece movable into successive positions by angular displacements about two axes x, x<SP>1</SP>, z , z<SP>1</SP>, at right angles to each other, the workpiece being engaged with a grinder M in each successive position. The mount for the workpiece is angularly-movable about the axis z, z<SP>1</SP>, in a gimbal D which, in turn, is angularly-movable about the axis x, x<SP>1</SP>, in a frame F. The angular positions of the mount relative to the gimbal and the gimbal relative to the frame may be determined either by pins V, W, engageable in holes in quadrants E, G, respectively, or by rotation of worms AA, BB, Fig. 3, engaging quadrant gears on the frame mount. The frame F may be movable along a slideway K by a screw J and handwheel I or pivotally mounted on a base to effect feed of the workpiece into the grinding wheel M having a plane or spherical surface, a comparitor L enabling the amount of feed to be determined. Alternatively, the feed may be effected by movement of the tool relative to the workpiece. Spherical surfaces are formed on the workpiece when the axes x, x<SP>1</SP>, and z , z<SP>1</SP>, are in the same plane and toroidal surfaces when the axes are in different planes. Electrical means under punched-card control may effect the successive movements of the worms AA, BB, the screw J being controlled by electro-mechanical or hydraulic devices also under punched-card control.
