Abstract
860,541. Carbon pile regulators. NEWTON, F. Feb. 13, 1957 [Nov. 21, 1955], No. 33312/55. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] The electromagnet armature 22 of a carbon pile regulator is secured to the underside of a platform 21 which is guided for longitudinal movement with respect to the piles 13 by four pairs of leaf-springs 25, each spring being doubled back on itself and having bent-apart ends engaging in slots in the platform 21 and in a flange 5 of the electromagnet casing 4. Pressure on the two piles is equalized by a lever 18 pivoted to a yoke 19 mounted on plate 21, and a bimetallic spring 28 compensates for temperature changes. Relative movement of parts 21 and 5 is limited by bolts 20 secured in the latter and moving freely through holes in the former, screws 15 being adjusted until washers 27 are just clear of platform 21 with no current in the electromagnet 1. A ceramic liner 21 for the carbon discs 13 is moulded into each metal housing 9.
